What can I do if my computer won't start?

•   The first thing you can do is check all the power leads - are they plugged in - are they fitted properly?
•   Check fuses and any circuit breakers in the house.
•   If all connections are OK then check the computer - are the power and hard drive lights on?
• If the answer to this is no then the chances are that your power supply in the computer needs replacing.
• If the power light on the computer is lit then try to restart again.
• Is there a 'beep' when the computer starts up?
• If the answer is no then you may need a replacement graphics card.

My computer starts but does not load windows.

•  Make a note of any error messages displayed and call or email the support number below.

My computer starts and then shuts down and restarts

• This is a common problem and can mean that your computer is infected with a virus.
• Try restarting the computer while holding down the F8 key. The computer should display a start-up menu.
• Choose 'start in Safe Mode' which allows you to check for problems.
• If you have an anti-virus programme run it now and let it check for infection. (If this doesn't help look at the next FAQ page)

How can I protect my computer from viruses and other 'nasties'?

• The bad news is that there is no way to completely protect a computer if you use the Internet.
• However, you can make it more difficult for these viruses and worms to infect your machine.
  • Install a good anti- virus and anti-spyware programme. There a many good products but choose one that updates regularly.
  • AVG antivirus is free and works well or as an alternative use Avast free
  • AVG also produce a good anti-spyware programme that is free
  • Another free anti-spyware programme is Adaware, from Lavasoft.
  • Comodo produce a number of good free programmes. There is a firewall, an anti-spam programme and anti-virus as well as a back-up facility .
  • If you want to pay for protection there are a number of good providers including Mcafee, Sophos, Kaspersky and Norton
